Ms Alexia’s Second Life Etiquette Guide. Part 2

* Fill out your profile. It gives you a chance to tell people about you, SL lives run at such a fast pace that this gives you a chance to grab the attention of people who may interest you. You can even add a few groups to show your interests. The good thing about groups is most are inactive so you get to give a quick synopsis of what you like without actually having to participate in the group or be bothered by unwelcome IMs from the group. An empty profile, particularly on an av that has been around for more than a few weeks, usually shows either the human isn’t engaged in sl (and you’ve got to wonder why they’re there) or that they’re an alt up to some kind of mischief.

* checking someones profile before you speak to them is common courtesy. It also allows you to think of some realistic conversation. That way you can avoid asking stupid questions like: ‘how long have you been in sl’ and ‘what do you do here’ can be avoided. That’s what profiles are for.

* If you like someone and do want to see them again, there actually is nothing wrong with arranging a time to meet. If you do this, the idea is you will turn up.. so if you can’t make it, and IM or email is appropriate.

* If you actually want to have friends rather than just an out of control friends list, try actually initiating contact once in a while. Friendship is a 2 way street and if you leave it to one person you’re just a black hole that will burden the other person and eventually they’ll give up trying. Unless they want something from you.

* If you find you spend time causing people grief just for the fun of it, get psychiatric help. Your inadequacies are out of control. Better still, leave SL.. that way I’ll have it all to myself πŸ™‚

and finally….

being nice to each other is not a bad thing. It’s not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign that you’re a mature adult who can recognise and acknowledge the good in others. If more people did this both worlds would be a better place.

and here if you want the tongue in cheek version of how to behave in this crazy world of ours.. πŸ˜‰

    hear, hear! Well said.

An empty profile is indeed discouraging. I myself love to read everyone’s profiles as there can be found so many interesting, fun and quaint things about that person there. And it really is a welcoming sign you carry with yourself, pushing away those who won’t find you interesting and attracting those likely to enjoy your company.

I wish persons in RL also had profiles attached to them. That, would be useful πŸ˜‰ eheh
