Adelaide’s Hidden Gems 4 – Penfolds
Whilst we’re on the subject of wine, let me briefly rave about Penfolds Winery. It’s 20 minutes in a cab from the centre of Adelaide (you can catch a bus and walk the last 1/4 mile but we are talking civillised here) and it’s a lovely spot to enjoy some nice food. Sadly they’ve built a separate restaurant these days (it used to be in one of their cellars and was just fantastic for ambiance) but it’s still worth the trip up there for lunch.
You can even partake in one of their tasting sessions before or after lunch and it’s a great way to spend an afternoon if you don’t want to slog it out to the Barossa or Southern Vales.
As I haven’t been there in a few years (a fair few years really, as that new restaurant looks pretty established) my information may be well out of date, but on the 25th of June each year they used to do an alternative Christmas. As Adelaide isn’t very traditionally seasonal when it comes to weather in December, they used to lay on a Christmas dinner in the middle of winter.. made it a great way to get into all those winter foods that are really just too hot and heavy to eat in summer. So if you’re around Adelaide in June, check to see if they’re running it.
